“How much does an interpreter cost” is without a doubt the million-dollar question! I am frequently asked for a flat rate without being given any background information about the specific event. The honest answer is…it depends 😉!
The cost of a professional interpreter depends on several factors, including:

Type of event
Are you organizing a large-scale congress, an international conference, or a corporate convention? The investment for these high-stakes environments will naturally reflect the scale of the event, compared to a trade show, a wedding, or an intimate family gathering!
Language combination
In my specific case, I keep things simple and transparent: I don’t differentiate rates between the languages I offer. Therefore, Italian<>Spanish interpreting (which flows incredibly naturally for me, as I am practically bilingual) costs the exact same as English<>Italian interpreting or English<>Spanish interpreting assignments.
However, as a general rule in the market, particularly complex or rare language combinations (such as Chinese or Arabic) typically command higher fees than major European languages.
Interpreting mode (simultaneous, consecutive, or liaison interpreting)
The cost of simultaneous and consecutive interpreting is roughly the same, given the intense real-time focus required. On the other hand, liaison or B2B interpreting costs less because the conversational format requires a slightly different type of cognitive effort.
No. of event participants
Strictly speaking, the intellectual effort required of the interpreter is identical whether they are speaking to one person or a crowd of 100 people. However, for smaller events with fewer attendees, I always take the smaller scale into account when tailoring the budget.
Event logistics (Date, location and time)
I generally try not to charge extra if the event is held on a bank holiday, in the evening, or on the weekend, though it does depend on the specific circumstances. If your event spans several consecutive days, a multi-day discount can certainly be discussed!
In terms of duration, a half-day booking is obviously less expensive than a full day. For very brief sessions lasting under two hours, a specialized ‘mini-conference rate’ applies.
Advanced notice seeking an interpreter
If you reach out to me well in advance, it makes the budgeting process much smoother than if you’re looking for an interpreter with a ‘today-for-tomorrow’ turnaround! Booking early gives me plenty of time to prepare, avoids last-minute rush fees and means I won’t have to re-arrange a million other commitments to make it work!
Technical equipment
If your event requires the portable bidule radio system for simultaneous translation, the cost will be slightly higher than for consecutive interpretation, which only requires a notepad for taking notes. If, on the other hand, your venue requires full acoustic interpreting booths and a sound console, I can gladly refer you to my trusted suppliers. They will provide you with a separate quote, as I do not supply large-scale booth equipment directly.
No. of interpreters
Two heads are better than one, but of course the costs are higher! If you’re organizing a simultaneous interpretation session lasting more than an hour and a quarter without breaks, or a lengthy, highly technical consecutive interpretation session, you will ‘unfortunately’ need a team of two interpreters. This ensures the highest possible quality and focus at all times without mental fatigue.
Project continuity
If you book my services multiple times, or have a recurring series of events, you will be eligible for a client loyalty discount compared to a one-off booking.
Professionalism and experience
A professional interpreter must adhere to a strict code of ethics. Thissets a minimum rate below which it is unprofessional to work. Therefore, standard market rates are maintained to reflect proper qualification while avoiding exorbitant fees that are out of line with the industry.
My rates are fully aligned with the current Italian market, guaranteeing you excellent value for your money. They represent a fair investment for you without being excessive, while ensuring my professional standards are respected. It’s a win-win situation! 😉
Subject matter
If you’re organizing an event in a sector where I already have extensive experience or specialize, the onboarding process is seamless. However, for exceptionally rare or highly technical fields that demand weeks of deep niche terminology research (such as astrophysics or advanced mathematics), rates may adjust to reflect the intense preparation required. That said, for the vast majority of my core specializations, the topic won’t significantly alter the quote.

Event location
If you’re organizing an event outside of my main bases in Italy and Spain, the travel expenses – such as the costs of standard flights and suitable accommodation so I can arrive well-rested and perform my duties to the absolute best of my ability.
