What is simultaneous translation/interpreting?

Simultaneous translation is a service carried out in real time, during which the interpreter orally translates the speaker’s words into the audience’s language and the audience’s interventions into the speaker’s language. In this specific type of interpretation, the interpreter doesn’t wait for the speaker to finish their sentence, but begins translating after just a couple of seconds, speaking simultaneously with the original speech.

A practical example of simultaneous translation is the interpreters at the UN, who perform simultaneous interpretations from isolated booths with headphones, translating in real time from one language to another.

In what modes can a simultaneous translation be carried out and what is the equipment needed?

Simultaneous translation can take place either in-person or remotely. In-person simultaneous interpretation can be carried out using soundproof booths, interpreting consoles (consisting of a microphone and transmitter headsets), and receiving headsets for event participants. All are connected by a technical system that must be operated by qualified personnel.

Alternatively, to cut costs and simplify the procedure, a bidule system consisting of receiving and transmitting radios can be used. In this case, the interpreter wears the transmitting radios with a microphone, and the event participants wear headphones connected to the receiving radios, tuning to the same channel as the interpreter. The bidule system can be provided by the client or can be rented from my trusted suppliers in Milan at competitive prices.

As another alternative, remote simultaneous translation/interpreting can be done using a platform with a built-in interpreting channel such as Zoom PRO, which allows the creation of virtual interpreting booths and gives participants the option to listen to the original audio (floor) or the translated version.

Is simultaneous translation carried out by one person or does it require a pair of interpreters?

Simultaneous translation services may require the presence of one or two professional interpreters, depending on the duration of the event. In the case of events lasting 1 hour (60 minutes) or less, only one interpreter can be hired for the simultaneous translation/interpreting service. If the event lasts longer than 1 hour (60 minutes), it is necessary to hire two professional interpreters in order to keep the quality of the service high at all times.

As a matter of fact, studies on the human brain have shown it is impossible for anyone to maintain full concentration for long periods of time. It is therefore necessary for simultaneous interpreters to rest roughly every 20-30 minutes. During these rest periods their boothmate will take over.

But don’t think of this as absolute rest! The interpreter not translating is busy helping their colleague with more complex terminology, proper names and figures, as well as continuing to follow the speech so they can get right back to interpreting when they switch again with their boothmate. In addition, they need to monitor group chats (in the case of remote events) and be ready to communicate with you at all times.

In what kinds of contexts can simultaneous translation/interpretation be useful?

Simultaneous translation/interpretation is suitable for a variety of types of events, including conferences, lectures, master classes, conventions and congresses, workshops, festivals, debates, tours, etc. Simultaneous interpretation is the perfect interpreting mode for events involving longer or shorter speeches by one or more speakers. However, if speeches or spoke interchanges are very short, or if you do not have the necessary equipment for simultaneous interpretation, consecutive or liaison interpretation may be more appropriate for your event.
