ITALIAN, ENGLISH AND SPANISH CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING SERVICES IN MILAN

If you’re organizing an event in Milan, another location or remotely and there will be Italian-, English- or Spanish-speaking attendees, consecutive interpreting services can help everyone understand speeches and participate effortlessly. Consecutive interpreting is particularly suited to interviews, debates, workshops, guided visits, conferences and congresses. Unlike simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting doesn’t involve expensive devices. I offer consecutive interpreting in Milan, remotely and can travel to other locations.

What is consecutive translation?

Unlike simultaneous translation, the consecutive interpreter performs the translation “retrospectively” rather than in real time. The interpreter takes notes while the speaker is speaking and translates at intervals that can be anything from a few seconds up to a maximum of five minutes.

The consecutive interpreter uses a complex system of notes and symbols (similar to shorthand) and their memory to fully and accurately render the message in the target language.

The length of the intervals between pauses for translation depends on the client. In my opinion, the ideal interval is between one and three minutes. To ensure a fluent, high-quality rendering, I do not recommend sentence-by-sentence translation or an excessively long interval (six mins+).

Professional interpreters use isolating headsets with a microphone.

In what format is consecutive translation carried out and what equipment is needed?

Consecutive oral translation can take place either in-person or remotely. The interpreter will carry a tablet or notepads and pens for taking notes. When performed in-person, consecutive interpretation equipment includes microphones for the speakers and the interpreter.

For remote consecutive interpreting, all you need is a platform that connects the interpreter with the event participants (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, StreamYard, etc.) and an isolating headset with a microphone. If the PC audio is clear, speakers and participants don’t need to wear headsets with a built-in professional microphone.

As an Italian, English and Spanish consecutive interpreter, I always use my own professional isolating headset and external microphone. I also use an Ethernet cable to enhance the connection and ensure you get great performance.

What is the difference between simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services?

Unlike simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpretation doesn’t require equipment such as soundproof booths or other expensive devices. Nonetheless, I still advise you to maintain an intelligible, clean sound in the room.

If your event involves very long speeches, I would advise you to opt for simultaneous interpreting instead of consecutive interpretation. If you are not sure which type of interpreting is right for you, write to me for a no-obligation quote. I will guide you in choosing the service that is right for you and your event!

Is consecutive translation carried out by one person, or does it require two interpreters?

Consecutive translation services usually require only one interpreter. However, there are some cases where a second consecutive interpreter is necessary. Events lasting three to four hours typically require only one interpreter.

For longer events or events of a highly technical nature, it is preferable to hire two interpreters. Even in these scenarios, one interpreter may be able to deliver consecutive oral translation single-handedly for the entire event, as long as sufficient rest breaks are built-in (and respected by the client). This allows the interpreter to deliver the best service possible.

In which contexts can consecutive interpreting be useful?

Consecutive interpretation is the perfect mode for speeches, interviews, debates, professional workshops, and various other types of public or private events where participants speak in turn for short periods.

Consecutive translation is also perfectly suited to other types of events (including conferences, lectures, masterclasses, conventions, workshops, festivals, debates, tours, etc.) where budget constraints preclude hiring expensive simultaneous interpreting equipment.

Remember that consecutive interpreting increases the duration of the event, making it last twice as long as the scheduled time.

How much do services cost?

Don’t worry about costs! You’ll receive a personalized, no-obligation quote tailored to your event.

I don’t have a one-size-fits-all rate. My rates are based on the type of event you’re organizing, the language combination, the number of participants, which interpreting service you require, the location and time of your event, necessary equipment and more.

How do I know if your English, Italian and Spanish consecutive translation service is right for me?

My consecutive interpreting services are for you if:

  • You’re organizing an interview, debate, workshop, guided visit, conference, congress, or other event and want everyone to participate effortlessly when speaking or listening to speeches. Consecutive interpretation is the perfect modality for these types of events.
  • Some, but not all, of your attendees understand English well. You want everyone to be able to participate equally in your event and don’t want to exclude anyone.
  • Some participants in your event can communicate well in English and wish to deliver their presentation in English, but not all speakers are comfortable doing so. Opting for consecutive interpretation allows all participants to express themselves fully in their native language.
  • You know Spanish or Italian or your counterparts have a decent level of English, but you have very specific goals and do not want to risk missing any of the detail of what is being said.
  • You do not have a good level of Italian and/or Spanish, and your counterparts don’t have a good command of English, and you want communication to go smoothly.
